“This financial award from the JL Legacy Fund (JL Nova Scotia Creative Award) has come at a critical time in my process as I embark this summer on drawing and painting the animated sequences for my documentary. ‍Lorna Kirk has been immersed in film and television as a director since earning her MA in Visual Anthropology (UK). Her award-winning doc ‘A Little Bit of Freedom’ (Nepal) was screened at the 53rd Cannes International Film Festival as part of the Kodak Emerging Filmmaker Showcase. The film was recognized by the IDA in Los Angeles with its David L. Wolper Award and was screened at dozens of film festivals worldwide. Lorna is a talented filmmaker who has directed documentaries and series for over a decade. Lorna has also worked as a 3rd AD on fiction films and was a finalist in the Harold Greenburg Fund Feature Film Script Development Program for her screenplay ‘House on the Hill.’

Lorna’s desire to find new ways and methods of bringing stories to life can be seen in her award-winning National Film Board short ‘Him,’ an animation that explores the powerlessness of the refugee experience. ‘Him’ has received numerous awards for best animation and has screened at dozens of film festivals worldwide. She is currently working on an animated documentary feature, ’36 Hitchin Road’ (England) - an intimate exploration of the unique relationship between a dying elderly woman and her unlikely caregiver, filmed over a decade ago. Lorna won the BravoFactual Award at Hot Docs for her pitch on ’36 Hitchin Road.’
